Description: |
Allen Clowes (left) and another person stand on a balcony in the Clowes Memorial Hall lobby, while three other people stand on the balcony directly below it. Clowes is the son of Edith Whitehill Hinkel Clowes and the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, in whose honor the building was constructed. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall officially opened on October 18, 1963. At the time of construction, the building was unique since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. The majority of the financing for the approximately $3,600,000 building was made possible by Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
