Description: |
A group of people including Allen Clowes (second from left) stand in a Clowes Memorial Hall side lobby in front of a wall of windows, while several balconies are above them on the left. When the building first opened, the 24,000 square-feet of carpeted lobbies (the grand foyer and two side lobbies combined), were an often publicized feature of the new building. Rising six stories high, the lobbies reportedly provided 12 square-feet of space for each attendee. Since Clowes Memorial Hall could seat up to 2,200 people when it first opened, the math is slightly off, but the lobbies were still larger than those offered by other performing arts venues of the time, as most only provided two square-feet per person. Clowes is the son of Edith Whitehill Hinkel Clowes and the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, in whose honor the building was constructed. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall officially opened on October 18, 1963. At the time of construction, the building was unique since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. The majority of the financing for the approximately $3,600,000 building was made possible by Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
