Opening on October 18, 1963, Clowes Hall was unique at the time of its construction since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. To ensure a successful design, many theatre design experts were consulted including Richard Kelly, design and decorative lighting; Jean Rosenthal, stage lighting and rigging; Ben Schlanger, seating and sight lines; and Bolt, Bernac and Newman Inc., acoustics. |
