Some of the stage lighting is visible in the background as are another piano, chairs, and music stands that are being stored backstage. The stage is 51 feet wide at the proscenium and over 50 deep. Opening on October 18, 1963, Clowes Hall was unique at the time of its construction since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. To ensure a successful design, many theatre design experts were consulted including Richard Kelly, design and decorative lighting; Jean Rosenthal, stage lighting and rigging; Ben Schlanger, seating and sight lines; and Bolt, Bernac and Newman Inc., acoustics.
