Description: |
People gather on the balconies in the Clowes Memorial Hall lobby during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala. The evenings performance was by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends. Besides Nureyev, performers included Carole Arbonnies, Fabienne Cerutti, Eric Camillo, Fanny Gaida, Marie Claude Pietragalla, Charles Jude, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and baritone Michael Shasberger. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. When the building first opened, the 24,000 square-feet of carpeted lobbies (the grand foyer and two side lobbies combined), were an often publicized feature of the new building. Rising six stories high, the lobbies reportedly provided 12 square-feet of space for each attendee. Since Clowes Memorial Hall could seat up to 2,200 people when it first opened, the math is slightly off, but the lobbies were still larger than those offered by other performing arts venues of the time, as most only provided two square-feet per person. |
