Thisrare astrological event occurswhen the full moon is at itsclosest point to the Earthselliptical path around the sun. Asupermoon takes place aboutonce every 14 years. During thisevent, the moon looks biggerand brighter than its normalappearance due to the alignmentof the Earth, Moon and Sun.This years supermoon wasspecial because it was the closestthe moon has been to Earthsorbit since 1948. During thissupermoon, the moon wasapproximately 221, 524 milesfrom Earths elliptical path, tocompare, the average distancefrom Earth to the moon is238,900 miles. The supermoonwas something many people -including BHSS students - -enjoyed witnessing.I thought it was so beautifulhow it was so different. I feelthat since people are so used tothe moon every night, seeingthis spectacular thing madepeople notice more of whatsurrounds them.SENIOR MARIALYSANDROUI thought it was really pretty. Itwas just unusual to see it so bigand bright. The normal moonseemed smaller than thesupermoon. I watched it frommy backyard, my backyard lit upfrom the supermoonsbrightness.SOPHOMORERILEY LUKENSPHOTO COURTESY OFCREATIVE COMMONSA SOCCER STADIUM IN ISTANBUL 12/10112 MILLION TOYS ARE SEIZED BY VENEZUELAS GOVERNMENT 12/111 Academics | 57
