SophomoreAveryl Perry moved to Bloomington recently from Mississippi and found a way toease the transition of adjusting to a new place through her involvement with the crosscountry team, despite her lack of experience with running.I felt like [cross country] would be a good place to start because you dont haveto try out, Perry said. You can start off wherever you want and just grow fromthere. Running was not the only part about the cross country team that appealed toPerry, however. A team atmosphere where she could create bonds with the girls shewould attend school with was the primary goal. Perrys first encounter with her newteammates was during the most intense week of the entire season: Dunes Camp.The first week that I met themwas at Dunes Camp when we went toLake Michigan and stayed there for aweek, and we ran twice a day, Perrysaid. As we were getting on the buses,they were all so welcoming. As herseason progressed, Perry became moreand more integrated into the crosscountry team, now describing them as afamily.[The team atmosphere] is veryencouraging. Everyone encourages eachother no matter where they are in theirrunning career, Perry said.Perry has found much more thanjust a way to stay active by joining thecross country team. The girls she hasmet formed a lasting impression onPerry and created an environment withwhich she hopes she will continue to beinvolved throughout the rest of her timeat North.I think there are ups and downs, but I hope to continue [running], Perry said.
