PHOTOS BY REBECCA GARCIAa breakThe inaugural Youth Convention, hosted by the Monoffered enrichment and instruction in culture, health,Belly dancers swayed to a rhythmicbeat. Murmured phrases in Spanishand Hebrew came frominexperienced mouths. The scent ofbutter chicken and grape leavesinfused the air. The YouthConvention was in full swing.For many onlookers, suchtastes, sights and sounds wereunfamiliar. These new discoveriesafforded participants valuableknowledge. This enrichment wasthe aim of the inaugural YouthConvention, an event dedicated toexposing students to new culturesand concepts. Held at theWarehouse on January 19, theconvention catered to the needs ofteenagers through a variety ofactivities.The convention gave studentsfrom any local school, includingmany from Bloomington South, theopportunity to expand theirunderstanding of foreign cultures,health, social issues and safetyskills. They participated in threerotations, each focused on adifferent facet of the convention.At the cultural station, studentssampled local ethnic foods,learned about several foreignlanguages. The socially awarestation enabled students to collectbusiness cards from local volunteeragencies at the volunteer fair.Finally, at the health and safetystation, students improved their selfdefense skills and learned abouthealthy eating and sleeping habits.The convention offeredsomething for everyone, andstudents tended to gravitatetowards stations that matched theirinterests. My favorite station wassocially aware because I got tosee the volunteer fair, said juniorDelaney Halloran. It was alsoroe County Youth Council,safety skills and more.really interesting to think about thesocial issues in our community andhow we could fix them.Freshman Breanna Sandershad a different opinion: myfavorite station was definitely thehealth and safety station. I lovedlearning self defense.The fair attendees includednot only those there to learn, butalso the Youth Council memberswho worked tirelessly to put theconvention together. Senior OliviaCrowe was among these councilmembers.
