PHOTO BY RILEY WEBBERDespite facing Bloomington Northon their home turf for all fallsports, the Panthers walked awaywith a memorable seven victories,including volleyball, boys soccerand girls golf.The Bloomington North vs. Bloomington Southvolleyball rivalry had been exceptionally tensefor several years leading up to the 2012 game,and when game day for the lady Panthersarrived, the pressure was on. Seeing as it wasfinal game against North, the senior girls weredetermined to win. As they stepped onto thecourt, senior Amy Zwissler said, I felt pumpedand ready to go. At the sight of their volleyballteam the Bloomington South crowd exploded,and the game was on.Seniors Zwissler, Madalynn Malone, andDanielle Robertson agreed that the last gamewas the most suspenseful. I didnt feel pressuredto win but I felt like we deserved to win, saidMalone. Seconds before the buzzer Zwisslerscored the winning point, pushing the Panthers toa 21-19 win over the Cougars. The entire studentsection went wild and rushed the court,surrounding the players. The win, Souths fourthover North since 2008, left the girls proud to bePanthers and hoping for more victories as theycontinued their season.-RILEY WEBBERBloomington Souths varsity boys soccer teambattled rival Bloomington North for a 1-0 victoryon August 30. The Panther defensive line foughta hard game and did not let a single goal intothe net. Sophomore Benjamin Ipsen earned hischance to be in the spotlight as he scored thelone goal, assisted by junior Robert Gabrielsen.It was an amazing feeling knowing that I scoredthe only goal; it meant so much more, saidIpsen.Sophomore varsity goalie Luke Crowe alsohad his chance to shine as he faced the pressureof defending Souths goal. Crowe dealt with thatresponsibility like a veteran, shutting out theCougars in his first varsity North vs. South game.Theres a lot more pressure now that Im avarsity goalie, said Crowe. Theres also morentensity put into the game, but its still fun.Head coach Kevin Sparks appreciatedCrowes performance in the game: He did reallywell for a sophomore to be in that situation and[have] that role hes taken.-ADALIE SCHERSCHELrj
