Its the reasonphones, once permanently attached to ourears, are discovering the new sensation ofoccasionally not being used. Its whatsresponsible for incorporating acronyms likeJ/K, LOL and BRB* into our everyday use.Its ... the Instant Messenger.Just one of the Internets many lures, itbegan as a feature unique to America Online(AOL), but expanded into somethingaccessible to anyone with Internet access. And with that accessibility, it turned into amethod of communication many studentscannot imagine living without.I use it all the time for getting homeworkhelp from my friends, and I talk constantlyon both the phone and AOL, sophomore DanEno said.Matt GibsonTaking advantage of the schools technology, sophomore Carrie Sare surfs the Internet in the library.Throughout the day students could be found on thecomputers researching, browsing or checking email.Despite the benefits of instantcommunication, it does have its downsides.Im always saying things I regret becauseits so fast, theres no time to think aboutwhat youre saying. Also, talking to peopleonline means they cant hear your tone, andmight take something the wrong way, sophomore Julie Qiu said. Its fun, but Ithink its making everyone lazier. Instead ofwriting good, old-fashioned snail-mailletters, I can just type a message and pressSend and it will deliver it across the world.Email was another aspect of Internetcommunication that spread through highschools with the same intensity that itspread throughout the working world. Notonly was it responsible for setting up get-togethers among friends but also sendingnotes without paying the price of postage.Ive been using the Internet and email forat least a year and a half, sophomore ToddDiemer said. If its something important, like if one of my friends is feeling bad, Illcall them up, but online conversations canget pretty in-depth.So no matter if you think InstantMessenger and email were the end ofcivilized society or the best things sincecordless phones, one thing remains clear:Internet communication was here to stay.*]ast kidding, laughing out loud, be right backHod-KloJeff HodgesAmber HollarsMeredith HolmesJustin HowardLindsey HudsonJames HughesSarah HunterKristin HuppTiffany HuppShaun HuttenlockerLaura HydeJames IngramAmanda IsomDonald JacksonSusan JacobMatt JacobsBen JamesMichael JarrellCorey JeffersonChristopher JohansenMatt JohnsonMatthew JohnsonChad JonesLyndsey JonesRobert JonesShandra JonesCordia KellChase KellerAngie KendallChris KenrickBryan KieferBrian KingSheena KinserStevie KinserTJ KinserZoe Klopfenstein126 GothicDESIGN BY JESSEE HAHN & MARTHA RAYNE |
