ALL OF THE [DAY]UGHTSOn March 12th, Daylight Savings Time (DST) began yet again, andeveryone moved their clocks one hour forward. Daylight Savings Time wasfirst conceived in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin as a way to conserve energy, but it has only affected Indiana since 2006. Some people dislike the changebecause of the loss of sleep, and many farmers of rural Indiana opposeDST because their schedules depend on sunlight rather than the clock.Nevertheless, DST has its benefits. More evening daylight could mean moreoutside exercise and even fewer traffic accidents.I like Daylight Savings Timebecause I like being able to drive toschool when the sun is already up. Ithelps wake me up a little bit better.JUNIOR KYLE JANISWORK, WORK, WORK THIS OUTSouth students share the benefits and downfalls of working with their peers in local spots suchas Dairy Queen, the YMCA, and the Bloomington Car Wash.Having a part-time job in high school can be demanding: longhours in addition to an already packed schedule can takequite the toll on a full time student. For many, though, thework is worth it: besides the obvious benefit of making moneyfor themselves, students also get the opportunity to learnmore about having professional responsibilities and workingwell with others, including friends. In Bloomington, theYMCA, Bloomington Carwash, and Dairy Queen are threelocations where a lot of South students work, whether it beover the summer, during the school year, or both.Junior Jack Hanchett works at the Bloomington Carwashand shares that working alongside his friends makes the timepass by fast and allows for time spent at the carwash to bemore bearable. Additionally, Hanchett shares that he spendstime with his friends outside of work as well, which addssome entertainment to the job in getting to know his coworkers better. According to Hanchett, though students areworking with their peers, they seem to be working hardbecause they know they have a job to do. These students liketo have fun with their job, but they know that the customercomes first. According to Hanchett, working with friendsdoesnt get in the way of their customers needs.Junior Annie Tuszynski works at the YMCA because oneof [her] best friends from South works there. Working with herbest friend has its benefits, but Tuszynski also gets to work witha lot of college students. This allows Tuszynski to interact withothers outside of South. Although she works with one of herpeers, she is working alongside older people and those whoshare the same interest in work. Not only does working in these places allow for students tospend time with their friends, it allows them to meet new peoplewho go South as well. Junior Cassidy Aders works at DairyQueen, and opens up about how working there is a good way tomeet people from South that [she] doesnt normally talk to. ForAders, working at Dairy Queen has allowed her to meet newfaces and become closer to those people over time. Working atthese local places has its benefits and can also be a commonhangout for South students. My favorite part is probably whenit starts to get colder so that you dont get as many customers, and you can just hang out and talk to different people that workthere, Aders said.- CAROLINE CONRAD1261 Community A FIRE CAUSES AN INTERSTATE 85 BRIDGE TO COLLAPSE 3/301 PROTESTERS AGAINST MADUROS GOVERNMENT |
