Description: around the world in aStudents found themseves in a whirlwind of cultures at DiversityDay where booths informed people about different countries.Diversity Day aimed to encourage knowledge and exploration of differentcultures and countries from around the world.Officers of Diversity Club got into the spirit of competition this year.We tried to incentivize the members to do a good job on their posters andmake the presentations interactive, senior Laura Oleson, Diversity Clubchair said. Oleson, along with secretary senior Josep Han, held acompetition between the booths. Whoever received the most votes fromattendees got gift cards to local ethnic and foreign cuisine restaurants; There were some cheating accusations but in the end Bhutan and NorthKorea won, said Oleson. The popularity and progress Diversity Day hasmade over the years was apparent. There were more booths that werenot necessarily about cultural diversity... like Poetry Out Loud and PROUD,Oleson said. These newcomers to the day came out to encourageattendance, and clubs like Fashion Club had a booth about differentfashions from different cultures around the world.Diversity Day hoped to encourage familiarity with other cultures. In atown with the second largest number or ethnic eateries in one place nextto New York City, food is a great way to do that; We think thatBloomington has all of these restaurants and if people want to try differentfoods they can. But not everyone can afford to go out to eat, so DiversityDay gives kids a chance to sample cuisine of other cultures without havingto spend money, Oleson said. Oleson and Han were optimistic about thefuture of Diversity Day. Considering the demographic of Bloomington, there is a lot of potential to include as many different kinds of people aswe can, Han said. Despite the new and improved interactive nature of thebooths and being happy with the progress the club has made, Han saidthere were some extra things that we [could] add for future events. Likemore sponsorship from local ethnic restaurants and interest from otherclubs. Of course there is always room for improvement but Diversity Daywas a huge success and thanks to the effort of the booths and everyonein [the club] it was more active and involved, than any previous year, Hansaid.-ARIANNE KELLEYAs AP tests consumed the lastcouple weeks of school, manystudents perfected the art ofstudying for such extensive tests.study AS[AP]For studying I just did a lot areading out of the review bookand my notes, and then doingthe review questions.-sophomore£Vo/ve126I find it more important tofocus on what Iveunderstood from classrather than what I wasntclear on.-junior Lucia DavilaSounds of South held Finale, a specialceremony where members canperform numbers alone or in groups tocelebrate their accomplishments of theyear.
