Salomon to John Badollet, January 9, 1830

Description: Signed by Salomon. Salomon begins this letter by pointing out that it’s been a long time since he’s written Badollet, and asks that Badollet give his compliments to Mr. and Mrs. Gruder, who he was charmed to meet. He has not forgotten about Badollet, who will live forever in Salomon’s heart and mind as a man of excellent moral fiber. Salomon also says he wants to share many pipes with Badollet but fears that the other man may be too old to make the trip—though Salomon will welcome him with open arms if he does visit. According to his own personal account, Salomon is a “first-class invalid”; it has become obvious to him that old age is only beautiful from afar, but his soul possesses a gaiety that softens the pains of aging nevertheless. Someone called “the honored one” (otherwise unnamed) has spent two months there working on his publication, which Salomon has skimmed, and he says the content went over even his head, so he is convinced the work must be profound. He also says their friend (unnamed) has transferred Badollet’s money to Hentze in Paris, who will use it according to Badollet’s wishes, which are unspecified. Salomon also mentions a storm that barely missed Geneva, an opportunity he had to meet the President on New Year’s Day, the rapid growth and progress he has seen in Washington, and a ball he attended. He closes the letter with a promise to write Badollet a longer letter when he finds a lucid moment.
