Salomon to John Badollet, March 3, 1824

Description: Initialed “LS”, assumed to be Louis Salomon. In this letter, Salomon says he would love to travel to New Geneva if Badollet travelled there, but his infirmities forbid any real travel, and he goes on to say that if Badollet could make a point to pass through Washington Salomon would be glad to receive and lodge him. In Swiss news, Vaud has been greatly improved since its separation from Bern, and the same has happened in Geneva since the French left. Rich citizens have founded numerous organizations for the common good and a new bridge has been built for the people who walk to St. Antoine, but Salomon says the progress of luxury is enough to sadden a man who is simple and wise. He goes on to call Georgetown decadent; three or four widespread bankruptcies have left many houses uninhabited, almost all of which are mortgaged to the bank. Salomon closes the letter saying he is sending Badollet a copy of Pergami’s memoires, likely the memoires of Bartolomeo Pergami, who was the late Queen Caroline’s servant and suspected lover.
