Salomon to John Badollet, January 7, 1833

Description: Correct date is believed to be 15th January 1833. Signed by Salomon. This letter begins with Salomon saying Badollet’s letter from December 26th was just returned to him, and he is hurrying to respond because at their age, delays are dangerous. Tomorrow is Salomon’s 72nd birthday, and his outlook is rather dismal; he says he is not sure being 72 will be worth the pain he has endured to get there. He received a letter from Mr. G [illegible, possibly Gere] that has upset him greatly, to such a point that he cannot eat and barely drinks, but he does not give Badollet the details of what he is suffering. Instead he changes the subject, saying his estranged wife came to help nurse him back to health even though he hadn’t asked her to. He promises to get the money Badollet lent someone (unnamed) who did not deserve it, and Salomon says he will send the sum back to Badollet as soon as possible. He goes on to talk about how Washington has grown, the economy, and gives reports on Gallatin, Cazenove, and their families, all of whom are well and successful. He also asks Badollet’s opinion on the Nullification Crisis, which Salomon is quite worried about, as he does not think it will end well.Salomon continues the above letter on 22nd January:Salomon delayed sending his letter because he was hoping to see Mr. Mieure and have more information to share with Badollet, but that has not been the case. He asks Badollet to say hello to his wife, who Salomon’s wife asks him about constantly, along with the rest of the Badollet family. Salomon and his wife’s recent meeting was the first time they had seen one another face-to-face in 19 years, and it went relatively well. Beyond this he writes about the Land Office report, shown to him by Mr. Moore, as well as the Americans’ love of festivals and celebrations.
