Dumont to John Badollet, August 1-2, 1781

In this letter Dumont relays a number of political complaints to Badollet, mainly centering on French interference and corruption of the Genevan and French governments. He also mentions several smaller things--he’s been sick but is recovering well, encourages Badollet to translate some classic novel (title not mentioned), promises to visit Badollet’s family, mentions that he visited Sylvester, who is doing well. Still, much of the letter concerns the strife and resistance in Geneva, and the ensuing military actions that have taken place; he describes a scene of chaos, rioting, gunfire, people fleeing Geneva never to return. Dumont considers their homeland lost, both to military occupation (French, Italian, and Swiss) and to tyranny. |
