Dumont to John Badollet, January 5, 1781

Description: It has been a while since Dumont has had time to write to Badollet, but after making his excuses and apologies, he launches into the latest news: the political state in Geneva is deteriorating quickly, and though France wants to try to mediate, Bern and Zurich refuse to support any such efforts. There was a universal call to arms among the reformers, especially the young, but Dumont was relieved to see that the crowd gathering at St. Gervais was mostly peaceful, aside from one man who fired his gun wildly in the air until he was subdued. A magistrate was exiled by order of the king, but nothing else bad happened, and yet Dumont still expects that some outside interference/mediation is coming.
