Description: |
Depicted on this postcard are two Beardsley residences: Ruthmere, home of Albert R. and Elizabeth Baldwin Beardsley and, in the background, the home of Andrew Hubbell Beardsley. A.R. Beardsley resided at 302 E. Beardsley Ave. and A.H. Beardsley lived at 226 E. Beardsley. Both homes were designed by E. Hill Turnock. 226 E. Beardsley was torn down in 1964 to make way for the new First Presbyterian Church parking lot. Albert R. and Elizabeth Baldwin Beardsley had the Beaux Arts styled mansion known as Ruthmere built in 1908. Various members of the Beardsley family resided there until it was sold in 1945. In 1969, the Beardsley Foundation, which is overseen by Robert B. Beardsley, Albert R.'s great-great nephew, bought and began restoring the building. It opened in 1973 as a house museum and continues in that capacity as of 2021. See also epl_photograph_a0007_01 and epl_photograph_a0020_01. |
