Description: |
The brick house to the left (8 St. Joseph Manor) was built by John Liver, later the home of F.A. (Ferdinand) and Margaret Buescher, owner of Buescher Band Instrument Co. The large white house prominently displayed in the middle of the photo was known as the Foster Mansion, built by W.H. and L. Mae Foster, and was located at 9 St. Joseph Manor. Mr. Foster was mayor of Elkhart in 1918. The large colonial house to the far right, 11 St. Joseph Manor, was owned by A.E. (Albert) and Grace Hansen, president/treasurer of Elkhart Brass Manufacturing Co. Both 9 and 11 St. Joseph Manor have been demolished by Rex Martin, president and CEO of NIBCO in September of 2002. These homes were a presumably designed by E. Hill Turnock, a noted architect of the times; only the Buescher residence has been proven to be his and is still standing as of 2021. |
