Description: |
The congregation of the Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutheranische St. Johannes Kirche was organized by 15 families on October 16, 1889. (It was also called the German Lutheran Church or St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church.) The first pastor was Rev. Robert Hoeck. This was its original structure at 1203 Eden and Prairie Streets. Services were conducted in German until 1954. Beginning in 1923, English services were held on alternate weeks. The congregation would eventually outgrow this structure and build a new one in 1912 at Harrison and S. Third Streets. It would also merge with the Congregation Church to become the St. Johns United Church of Christ. The congregation is still active at its current 2701 E. Bristol Street location. |
