Dispatch call, December 8, 1966

Description: This is a digitized recording of a dictabelt, which the Indianapolis Fire Department used to record dispatch calls during the 1960s and 1970s. Following are the calls on this dictabelt: 1) Ambulance requested at Sherman Dr. and Prospect Ave 2) Caller asks how many pieces were at the emergency, Dispatcher says 22, number of men was 4 times that. 3) Major Hatfield of Salvation Army called to check on the need for their services. 3) Caller talks about flooding sewers to get gas out, flooding peoples basements, issues with nursing patients in affected area. 4) Herb Miller of B shift, coming in from out of town and asked about explosions. Dispatcher informs him emergency is over. 5) Joe Kilroy calls to inform dispatcher that the meter showed a lot of gas in the sewer at 30th and Martindale, dispatcher informs him that location is near the end of the sewer, so they should keep the flow moving west. 6) Captain Phillips of Engine 5 asks dispatch to send gas company back to 25th and Station, they have basements filling with water and gas and they cant get in to turn off gas. Dispatcher sends gas company to speak to Chief Hanley. 7) Off-duty fireman called to see if he was needed. 8) Dispatcher follows up on injured firemen, Haley had a ruptured ear drum, Holiday and Baxter were also taken to hospital. Elliott is still at hospital, injuries unknown. Recording ends at 5:51 PM.
