No. 02 - Jonathan Jennings

Description: The caption for this image, written in 1916 and provided by the Educator-Journal Company, follows: “2. Governor Jonathan Jennings, was the first governor of Indiana. He was born in New Jersey in 1784. His father was a Presbyterian minister. His parents lived later in Pennsylvania, where Jonathan received his education. He studied Latin and Greek as well as the higher branches of mathematics. Gov. Jennings was no orator but was a most pleasing speaker. He will be remembered for the gallant work which he did in preventing Indiana from becoming a slave state and his untiring efforts to help the pioneers to secure rich and fertile land. He retired from public office to his farm near Charlestown, Clark County, where he died in 1834.”
