No. 07 - Constitutional Elm, Corydon, Indiana

Description: The caption for this image, written in 1916 and provided by the Educator-Journal Company, follows:“7. The constitutional elm now standing in Corydon is so called because the constitutional committee which met in Corydon on June 10, 1816, adjourned to its shades for deliberation. The tree is still standing, but it shows its age. It is one hundred and twenty-four feet from tip to tip, its trunk is five feet in diameter and it is about fifty feet in height.”[The Constitution Elm suffered from Dutch Elm disease and died in the mid-1920s. Its trunk, however, has been preserved and remains a historic site in Corydon.]
