The caption for this image, written in 1916 and provided by the Educator-Journal Company, follows:“4. The first state capitol is still standing in a good state of preservation at Corydon, Harrison County. On the 9th day of March, 1809, a contract was let to Dennis Pennington for the building, which was completed in 1811, at a cost of $1,500. It is erected of limestone and is forty feet square. The foundation sets three feet in the ground and the lower story walls are two and one-half feet thick. The room is fifteen feet high. The second story walls are two feet thick and this room is ten feet high.”[The First State Capitol building still stands on the square in Corydon, Indiana.] |
