Mary Jane and Olive Griffin in kitchen of Porter-Griffin home

Description: Sisters Mary Jane (at left) and Olive Griffin (at right) are busy with cooking and cleaning in the kitchen of the Porter-Griffin house, which served as their home in Corydon, Indiana from childhood through adulthood. The new frame kitchen was added to the house in 1896. In addition to housework, both women were key figures in the family dry goods firm and clerked at their store on the town square. For a time, Mary Jane also was a school teacher. Neither of the sisters ever married and both lived in their family home along with their brother Dan until their deaths. Olive died in 1958 at age 81, and Mary Jane in 1961 at age 86.
