Helen Porter Griffin at window, Porter-Griffin house, Dec. 4, 1939

Description: Helen Porter Griffin, age 96, stands at a window in her historic home in Corydon, Indiana. Born December 1, 1844 to Elizabeth McClelland and Judge William A. Porter, Helen grew up in the 1817 two-story, brick house on East Walnut Street that had been the residence and headquarters of Indiana Governor William Hendricks in the 1820s. Shortly after Helens marriage in 1871 to Corydon merchant Patrick Griffin, the house became their home. The couple raised seven children in the house and continued to reside there the rest of their lives. Patrick Griffin died in 1917 at age 86. Helen continued to reside in her childhood home until her death in April 1940. Three of her surviving adult children who had never married and had continued to live in the Porter-Griffin home, also resided in the house until their deaths. The last Griffin to reside in the long-time family home was Daniel P. Griffin, who died in 1975 at age 90. The Griffin heirs transferred the property to the State of Indiana to manage as a historic site open to the public. The Porter-Griffin house was renamed to reflect its earlier history as the Governor William Hendricks House and Headquarters.
