Description: The file contains six documents that relate to the suit Thomas Jones brought against John McGowen. In an affidavit sworn before Henry VanderBurgh on July 22, 1808; Thomas Jones of Vincennes stated that John McGowen was indebted to him in the sum of $90.03 1/2 for goods sold and delivered, money lent and paid for him. On July 22, 1808, Robert Buntin, Clerk issued a Summons for the sheriff to take John McGowen so that he would appear in court the last Monday of July 1808 to answer to a plea of Trespass by Thomas Jones for $150. On the verso side of the Summons, Damage of $150.00, there is an affidavit filed that the sum due is $90.03 1/2 therefore bail is required for that amount. R. Buntin no time to serve, James Hayes, D. Sheriff, tax not paid. On August 17, 1808, John McGowen, Willaim Carrothers and David Wilkins posted bond to Parmenas Beckes, Sheriff, in the sum of $200.00 to insure McGowen would appear in court the last Monday of November 1808. The document was signed by John McGowen, Wm. Carrothers, and D. Wilkins. A Complained filed by John Rice Jones for Thomas Jones during the November Term 1808, stated that John McGowen was attached in a plea of Trespass. On the first day of March 1808 McGowen became indebted to Jones in the sum of $150.00 for goods and wares he delivered and sold. McGowen promised to repay the debt whenever requested, but the debt had not been repaid. Jones also put John Rice Jones in as his lawyer for this suit. At the bottom of the Complaint, We of the jury find for the Plaintiff eighty four dollars and three cents in damages. John Evans. An account ledger for John McGowan with Thos. Jones for August 1807 to February was also included. To cash paid for writing a mortgage: 13 shillings; 6 large files 1 pound 7 shillings; 2 rasps 4 shillings 6 pence; 3 polishing files 13 shillings 6 pence; 2 half round files 6 shillings; 6 small flat files 4 shillings 6 pence; 6 gun locks 18 pounds 5 shillings; trunk 1 pound 40 shillings; cash lent 1 shilling 6 pence; 1 quart whiskey 1 shilling 6 pence; 1 knife 3 shillings 9 pence: Total 25 pounds 10 1/2 . To half stocking a gun and 1 pound bullet molds which work he was to do for difference in price of horse in swapping with Joseph Larinlett. 26 pounds 12 Shillings 87 1/2 pence equal to $88.78 1/2. Paid for recording a deed 7 shillings 6 pence. $90.03 1/2 The last document was the account covering the court costs which totaled $21.51 1/2. According to the Knox County Minute Book of the Court of Common Pleas 1807-1810, pages 181 and 183: during the March Term 1809, William Carrothers appeared and acknowledged himself as special bail in the cause. The Plaintiff appeared by is attorney and in a motion asked to continue the cause until July, 1809.
