Howe [How], Henry advs United States 1807

Description: The documents in this file relate to the suit brought against Henry Howe by the United States. Howe (possibly from Tennessee) was accused of taking $200 species from John McCandless on November 9, 1806. A summons was issued to apprehend Henry Howe to answer to the charge. The summons was issued by David Robbe, at Ramseys Creek on November 13, 1806. On the back of the summons, Hubbard is his Kentucky name. William Davis and A. T. Sperry (?). Recognizance bonds were given to John McGowen and John McCandless for $200. George Wallace signed the recognizance November 20, 1806. During the November Term 1806, John D. Hay declared that Henry Howe, yeoman, took from him one razor and one razor strap. Henry Hurst filed the complaint. A summons was issued for John D. Hay to appear before the Grand Jury by Robert Buntin, Clerk. It was executed by James Adams, Deputy Sheriff with $.4650 fees attached. Included in the file was a statement by John D. Hay regarding Henry Howe stealing the razor and strap. Henry Howe was indicted on both charges. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, 1807-1810 page 3, How was found guilty of Larceny at the November Term last for stealing dollar from Wise and he is to restore to Wise the sum stolen, pay a fine of $4.00 and pay court costs. The was also ordered to pay John Hay the sum of $1.00 and pay court costs.
