Description: The file contains documents and accounts relating to the case Robert Smith, Trustee, brought against the Alexander D. Scott Estate. Included are the accounts Alexander Scott had with Smith and Carson and the accounts Smith and Carson had with Alexander Scott as a Clerk of Knox County Courts. The case was filed during the May Term 1840. The account that Alexander D. Scott had with (Robert) Smith and Carson was from 1834-1837. Some of the items purchased were: 1 lb wrought nails $.25, french spelling book $ .50, 28 yds blue calico $7.00, fan $.37, tooth brush and fan $ .13 3/4, 8 merino $4.25, 8 lbs sugar $1.00, 2 pair shoes $2.50, cash for plank for Church $5.62, eggs and tea $1.50, cash lent $3.00, leghorn hat $1.75, trace chains, reins and iron $5.25, cash lent $20.00, 2 shell side combs and slippers $2.00 for a total of $102.82. This was totaled by George Crickshank, Com and with his fees of $.25 the total was $102.67. In a sworn deposition taken by Justice of the Peace, Samuel Hill, Charles Brewster swore that the account was accurate to the best of his knowledge and that the handwriting of the account was John Carson, Thomas Carson or James Theriac. The second account sheet was of the work that Alexander Scott had completed for Robert Smith between 1834 to 1838. Dunning $3.33, January 1836 certificate and seal and store license $.50, October 1836 certificate and seal and store license $.50, January 1835 certificate and seal and store license $.50, January 1836 certificate and seal and store license $ .50, September 1836 State of Indiana vs Antoine Violette $8.25, September 1838 clerks fees in State vs Robert Smith $1.50 for a total amount of $26.67. For each case listed with clerk fees, there is a billing sheet that lists specific services e.g. March Term 1834 John Fitzpatrick vs Mathew McDonald Action $.06 and Docketing $.12 1/2, Motion and Rule to Dismiss $.12 1/2, Filing argument $.06, Dismissing $ .12 1/2, Motion $.10 Judgement $.15, Docketing Judgement $.12 1/2, Complete Record $4.00 for a total of clerk fees $4.87. Also included in the file is a promissory note written to Robert Smith for eleven dollars and seventy-one cents for the use of Sam Smith by A.D. Scott.
