Oral History interview with Dianna Ross

Description: This is an oral history interview with Dianna Ross. Dianna tells of her family history. Her grandfather, Alfred Catlin, grew up on a farm east of Jessup, Indiana (Parke County). Family research points to the fact that Catlin, Indiana was named after her family. Her grandmother, a Quaker, grew up Columbus, Indiana. Dianna is proud of the fact that in the 1890s, her grandmother graduated from high school, Earlham College and also attented Indiana State Normal College where she received her teaching certificate. Her grandmother, Zella, after graduating from Indiana State Normal College in Terre Haute, Indiana, wanted to stay in that area and later taught at what was called the Rough and Ready school in Parke County. After marrying Diannas grandfather, the family moved to her husbands farm near Columbus, Indiana. While teaching in Parke County, Zella roomed with Blanch Overpeck and Grace Powers, local Parke County residents. After Dianna met and married her husband, Bill, they began their married life in Parke County where her husband was employed. Following in her grandmothers footsteps, Dianna taught elementary school in the area for many years.
