This is a color photograph of the Thomas N. Rice house located on lot 8 on North Market Street in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana. It is a two story wooden frame house with successive peak roofs, a large porch that extends along the front of the house with a gable over the front steps, and an iron fence which is a recent addition. Thomas Newton (1829-1904) was one of the first white children born in Montgomery County, Indiana, the son of Isaac and Narcissa Allen Rice. He married Margaret (1832-1913), the daughter of John Digby on 7 November 1855. Thomas was a member of the law firm of Rice and Johnston in Rockville with James T. Johnston. He served as superintendent of schools, was on the Board of Education of Rockville and was instrumental in getting the county roads graveled as well as organizing the company that built the toll road from Rockville to Annapolis.
