McCune (Alexander) house Rockville, Indiana.

Description: This is a color photograph of the Alexander McCune home located on Lot 76 on the corner of Michigan and Pennsylvania Streets in Rockville, Indiana. The house, built in 1828 for Edward Leonard, is of the Federal/ Italianate style with a gable roof. A two story addition was added later. John Sunderland purchased the house in 1833. Alexander McCune bought the house from his son William in 1878 for $4000 and it remained in the McCune family until 1991. McCune (1806-1882) was the son of Robert and Prudence Laughlin McCune. He married Rosilla Chaney 28 August 1829. In partnership with Samuel Lowry, he ran a saw mill, carding factory, fulling mill and flour mill in the area that became known as McCunes Mill in WabashTownship. He deeded land to the trustees of Wabash township for the first school in 1834 and was one of the first directors of the Parke County Bank. He lived in Mecca, Indiana from 1821-1860 then moved to Lima, NY until he removed to Rockville, Indiana in 1878. He and his wife are buried in the Rockville Cemetery. The house is part of the Rockville Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
