Folder 7594 in Box 143 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains 17 in the case of State of Indiana vs. James Johnson. During the February, 1851 Term of the Knox County Circuit Court the Grand Jury indicted James Johnson, possibly a man of color for petty larceny. He was accused of stealing a hog on February 1, 1851 from William Soder. A warrant was issued to the sheriff on May 13, 1851 and it was executed on July 22, 1851 by William Scott. Johnson posted the $50.00 bond and was to appear in court on the third Monday of the August Term to answer charges. According to records in the file he failed to appear so another warrant was issued on November 6, 1851. The reply on the back of that warrant Scott stated he could not find Johnson in Knox County. Two more warrants were issued in 1852 and Johnson was still not found. Three more warrants were issued in April of 1852, this time sent to Pike and Gibson counties and again to Knox County Sheriff. All were returned with the same statement that Johnson was not to be found. On January 23, 1854 a summons for witnesses were sent to the Sheriff. There was no indication on the back of that summons whether they appeared in court on the first day of the March, 1854 term as directed. Three more summonses were sent in 1854 to sheriffs (one to Knox and two to Gibson Counties), all with no results of finding Johnson. In 1855 four more warrants were sent (to Knox, Gibson, Sullivan and Davies Counties) again, Johnson not found. The documents in the folder consist of the indictment, the arrest and bond document, and all of the summons attempts. |
