Description: Folder 7690 in Box 146 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains two documents in the case of Aaron Knight vs. Eliza Thomas. During the September, 1855 Term of the Knox County Circuit Court Aaron Knight, a man of color petitioned the court for a divorce from his wife Eliza Thomas, a woman of color. Knight told the court that he had married Eliza in 1835 and they had lived together about ten years. He also stated that in 1846 he was requested by the state of Indiana to attend to important business for the state in the city of Jeffersonville and was compelled to leave his wife behind and that during his absence which extended until 1854 his wife married a man named Thomas (no first name given.) Knight asked the court to dissolve his marriage to Eliza and grant him relief that he may be entitled to. The documents consist of Knight’s petition and the summons for Eliza Thomas to appear in court on the second Monday in September, 1855. There is no further information as to the outcome of the case.
