During the September 1855 term of the Knox County Circuit Court Charlotte Rusk, a woman of color filed a petition with the court asking that they grant her divorce from her husband Andrew, a man of color. She stated that they had been married August 24, 1854 and had lived together about four months. She said that in September, 1853 her husband had been indicted, tried and convicted of a felony and was in the penitentiary. She asked that the marriage be dissolved and that she receive further relief she might be entitled to. The three documents consist of her petition, the summons for Andrew to appear in court on the second Monday in September, 1855, and a note from an attorney for fees when collected. |
