Knox County court record for Booker vs. Booker, 1834

Description: Folder 4131 in Box 75 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains three documents in the case of Booker vs. Booker. This case was a divorce filing from Susan Booker to David Booker, both people of color. Susan testified that in 1823 she had married David Booker from Davies County and had lived with him about a year before he deserted her, leaving her with no means of support or maintenance. She stated he had sold articles of furniture bought by her own labor, that he had been guilty of adultery, and a short time after the marriage treated her with cruelty in an inhumane manner. The summons for Booker was served on August 5, 1834. There is no conclusion from the court. The documents include the complaint from Susan, the summons for David Booker, and a statement to the court from citizens of Davies County describing misbehavior, bad character, etc. of David Booker from many people who knew him. There was a total of sixty signatures in support of Susan in this document.
