Knox County court record for Huffman vs Huffman, 1830

Description: Folder 3986 in Box 73 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains three documents in the case of Huffman vs. Huffman. On February 5, 1833 a hearing was conducted referring to an order given by the court in 1830 that Joseph Huffman, a man of color was to pay his former wife Milly (Bodlin, Baldwin) Huffman, a woman of color five dollars annually on the first day of June until their youngest child was eighteen. Milly told the court that Joseph had failed to pay her. Huffman was summoned to court on the first Monday in March, 1833 to answer charges. His attorney stated in court that Milly had given birth to a female bastard child without having had any sexual intercourse with her former husband for the space of 18 months previous to the birth of said child, whereby a fraud was committed by Milly. There is no further information of the case in the folder. Documents consist of the court hearing, statement by Milly’s attorney, and statement by Joseph’s attorney.
