Knox County Court, Caesar Ember vs Lewis Fellows, 1835

Description: LewisFellows purchased twenty cords of wood located on the bank of the Wabash River in Busseron Township from Caesar Ember. The wood was $1.25 per cord for $25.00. On January 30, 1835 Fellows is ordered to appear before H. B. Shepard, J. P. Knox County Court for nonpayment. Willis Fellows appears on behalf of Lewis Fellows on February 6, 1835. Mr.Fellows, files false claims against Caesar saying that he, Caesar was not telling the truth. D. H. Phillip, J. D. Gardner Clement Leonard, Philander Fellows, William Baker are all called in as witnesses. Mr. Fellows says he was presented a bill for the wood by Caesar but he stated to Ember he owed him nothing as he bought the wood from plaintiff’s son. Horace Alcott testifies on February 11, 1837 before Jonathan Collins, J. P. and states he heard Willis and Caesar talking and he heard Caesar tell Willis that the wood was above his place on the river bank at the mouth of the Maria Creek. Alcott states there were fourteen cords and half of another and he brought the wood to the mill.
