Folder 2091 in Box 35 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds two documents in the case of the Sheriff of Knox Co. vs. James Butler, a man of color. The case was for debt litigation. The two documents are summonses for Butler to appear in court and declare under oath. He is to state whether he was indebted to the Sheriff for the use of other creditors of John Long. Both of the summonses were returned to the court noting that Butler could not be found. |
