Description: Folder 1774 in Box 29 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds three documents in the case of Lucy (of color) vs. Isaac Shelby. Lucy, a woman of color files suit against Shelby but reasons for the suit is not found in the folder. Lucy’s attorney filed for a change of venue to Harrison County claiming he could not get a fair trial in Knox or any other county in the first circuit “owing to the prejudices of the people in said county of Knox and throughout the first circuit”. He was granted the change of venue and papers were sent to the clerk’s office in Harrison County. The three documents are a request for change of venue, a bond signed by John Thompson and James Scott for the presumed witnesses. Also included are a Declaration Bond affidavit and an order by Lucy to dismiss the deposition of John Weathers and a plea.
