Knox County court record for State of Indiana vs. Stewart, 1818

Description: Folder 2075 in Box 35 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds twelve documents in the case State of Indiana vs. Mathew Stewart. This case is an indictment of Mathew Stewart, a man of color for larceny. He was accused of stealing pork and linen from Ewing. Witnesses, men of color were summoned for both plaintiff and defendant. The jury gives a not guilty verdict. The twelve documents consist of four summonses for Stewart, and witnesses for Stewart and the state, two statements by Ewing, a statement from John Jordan, a subpoena for Jordan, three recognizant bonds (for Ewing, Jordan, Stewart) and the jury verdict.
