On Feb. 1, 1806 William Hawkins comes before Robert Buntin, Clerk of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas with a Negro woman named Marget, age 28. She was brought to this territory from South Carolina and she is to serve William Hawkins and his assignees for a term of twenty years. William is to provide Marget with sufficient clothing, washing, and lodging according to her station and degree. At the completion of her service she is not to become a county charge. |
