THE NORMAL ADVANCE137THE TROJAN LITERARY SOCIETY.The Trojan Literary Society has been havingsome very interesting programes this term, butthe greater part of its energy has been devotedtoward the big debate of the Society to be heldon Thursday, February 11. Two new andpromising members were added to the Societythis term. Both are taking public speakingthis term and are sure to be a big addition tothe Trojans. They are J. L. Stark and EstelMclntire.GERMAN CLUB.Each Wednesday afternoon finds an interested and select audience to take part in theprogram for the German Club. Mr. Muttererentertained the members at his home on thefirst Wednesday of the term, where a victrolaconcert was enjoyed.Neutrality has been strictly observed during the month, since Miss Cuppy devoted onemeeting to the reading of Alfred Noyes splendid plea for peace, The Wine-Press, and Mr.Mutterer read aloud at another meeting someof the types of war-poems that have appearedfrom time to time in the magazines since theoutbreak of the war. The club has taken upthe reading of Wagners Tannhauser, andall members and friends of the club who areinterested in the opera are invited to come tothe meetings and hear Mr. Mutterers readingand explanation.Does not all experience show that in the longrun it is easier to be than to seem—to acquirepower than to hide the lack of it? Was thereever a lazy boy at school, or student in college, who did not take infinitely more pains to dodgerecitations and mask his ignorance than wouldhave been necessary to master his lessons, however dry or crabbed ?—William Mathews. |
