104THE NORMAL ADVANCEAlette*THE opening of the new term finds the I.S. N. athletes and sports ready for thebig act in the basketball drama. All the curtain-raisers and the opening scenes have passed. As a curtain-raiser, we had the inter-classgames. The Juniors captured the championship of the school by defeating the SophsWednesday, Dec. 9, by the close score of 28 to23. These games have proven very interestingthis year, and have developed some coming material. Among the more promising are Mark,Leech, Lockwood, Mandeville, Clayton, Shaw,Blakesley, Michaels and Martin. Some of thesemen have made an excellent showing and madethe varsity men work hard to hold down theirjobs. As sort of a climax to this part of theentertainment and a direct result of thechesty feeling of the Juniors, there wasstaged on Monday afternoon, Dec. 21, the farce,Juniors vs. Faculty. The Faculty had consented to participate in such folly only on certain conditions—namely:(1) That they be allowed to use any professor, assistant professor, laboratory or officehelper, or any of the janitors.(2) That they be allowed as many intermissions as necessary for wind. While these conditions were decidedly unconstitutional, the Juniors were forced to acceptbecause they wished to use Strickler of theManual Training Department. It was clearlyto be seen that the Juniors were not quite sochesty on the fatal afternoon when theFaculty team, composed of Profs. Schockel,Laubach, Higgins, Sing, Breitwieser and Westphal, Bowles of the biology department, andHeinie Knauth, stepped out on the stageready for action. Well, who could blame them ?The Junior team was composed of Strickler,Michaels, Mark, Robinson, Shaw and Lock-wood. In the very opening scene, Profs. Higgins and Laubach, having played basketball before, refused to do as Coach Westphal orderedthem to do, and consequently were ordered towarm the bench. This action simplified matters some. The action all through was fast andfurious, and the scene closed with the crestfallen Juniors holding the small end of thescore, defeated probably, as much by Prof.Sinks awe-inspiring size as by the excellentplaying of the Faculty team. After the curtain-raiser the scenes of the regular drama followed:. Scene I. Normal vs. Merom College, Dec. 4.Result: Normal 57, Merom 7.Scene II. Normal vs. Danville, Dec. 11.Result: Normal 39, Danville 27.Scene III. Normal vs. Middletown Independents, Dec. 17. Result: Normal 43, Middle-town 16.Scene IV. Varsity vs. Alumni, Dec. 18.Result: Varsity 46, Alumni 19.The Alumni team was composed of Wright,Knox, Sink, Schockel and Byrn, and they putup a good article of basketball. The remarkable thing about their performance was thatthey were not forced to call time once becauseof lack of wind. While these scenes of the first act have beenvery interesting, yet the big act is just opening. The act opens with the stage set for the gamewith Wabash, Jan. 12. This ended with ourfirst short score of the season. The Scarletteam proved too fast for us, and the curtaindropped with us holding the short end of the28 to 12 score. However we have a chance tocome back. Then comes Earlham, Rose Polytechnic, Franklin and other strong schools, eachin turn to receive their dose of I. S. N. basketball dope. These big acts in the drama should proveto be a strong drawing card, and a full house |
