Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE185Alettes
WITH the presentation of the Ns byPresident Parsons on March 21 endedthe most successful basket ball season that Indiana State Normal has ever known. Beginning with only one old man, Unverferth, CoachWestphal built up a team that attracted noticeall over the State. None of the other men hadever played on a college team before this season.Vermillion, a varsity man of last year, came inlater in the year, and by his splendid all-aroundplaying helped materially in obtaining the record of this year. Manager Wright and CaptainClark are to be complimented on the splendidshowing made by them this year. The following men received the letter: Clark, Wilson,Stiffler, Vermillion, Knauth, Unverferth andManager Wright. The opening game of the season was withMerom College on our floor and before an enthusiastic crowd of more than five hundred students, the State Normal basket ball quintetswamped Merom in the first college game of theseason, December 6, at Terre Haute by a scoreof thirty-five to thirteen. The visitors did nothave a chance against the sensational early season team work displayed by our team. Normaldisplayed excellent form in winning. The individual work was good and the team ran welltogether. Normals forwards and center didthe stellar execution. Clark shined as a guardby sensational stops of the ball and close workin Meroms territory, while the bulk of Wilsonproved a stumbling block for the Merom forwards.Stiffler, the big man of our team, made thefirst points of the game ten seconds after theball was put in play by tossing in an easy fieldgoal. From that time on the game was allNormal. In fact, it was so much so that theteam did not seem to be exerting themselvesvery much. At the end of the first half thescore was nineteen to six. During the last fewminutes of play Wilson was replaced by Caffee,an all state football man of Wiley High School.Caffee is small, but he played the fastest game,at guard, of the evening. Unverferth, who wasconsidered to have done his share by makingnine points on fouls, gave way to ManagerAVright. Score, 35 to 13.The second game of the season with DanvilleNormal College on December 13 was anotheroverwhelming victory for our team. From thefirst ten seconds of play in which Stiffler threwour first goal the game was all State Normal. At once Knauth and Unverferth picked uptheir speed and not once was the opposition ableto stop the splendid team work of these two.Stiffler had things all his way with the pivot
