52THE NORMAL ADVANCESOCIETYWOMENS LEAGUE.The Womens League has an exceptionallybright outlook for the year, 1908-09. The pres- •ident, Miss Frances Payten, who was electedlast spring, resigned the office, having secureda position as teacher of music and drawing inthe schools at Bicknell, Indiana. The cabinetheld a meeting the first week of the term andelected Miss Grace Weils president. MissWeils comes from Leland Stanford Universityand the members of the League feel that in herthe League has a competent leader. The otherofficers are: Vice President, Miss HenriettaWay secretary, Miss Anna Paul treasurer,Miss Ada Tichenor.Fourteen chapters have been organized.Plans have been made for several social functions to be given during the year. The firstwas a Halloween party given in the gymnasium Nov. 1, from three to six p. m. Aboutone hundred girls were present dressed in costumes which were of various designs and colors.ALPHA.Friday afternoon, November 13, the Alphaswere hostesses at an afternoon tea the first ofa series of teas to be given by the WomensLeague. Besides the League members andFaculty, the Senior class was invited as honorguests. A burlesque on The House ThatJack Built, was given, which was sung byMrs. John McAdams, with Mrs. Cornelia Farisas accompanist. The Association rooms weredecorated in yellow and white, the Alpha colors. Large brass vases were filled with yellowchrysanthemums. Misses Sarah Swihart andEdith Hamilton poured the tea, assisted bythe other Alphas. Tea, wafers, and mintswere served, in which the color scheme wascarried out in the yellow and white.enth Street Misses Mary Wible, Flora Sam-pert, Frances and Jean Guffigan. A hot supper was served, after which Miss BlancheHanley was hostess for a Varieties Party.On October 30, a hay-ride party attended abox supper six miles south of the city. Professor and Mrs. Bean chaperoned the crowd.A dance is to be given in the near future.CANDIDA.The Candidas and a number of their gentlemen friends were delightfully entertained at459 N. Fifth St. Saturday evening, November7. All present enjoyed a very pleasant andagreeable evening because of the various novelentertainments. . One of. the most striking ofthese was a mock wedding, after which refreshments were served. The favors and decorations were carried out in purple and white, theSection colors. Those present were, the MissesSilva Wood, Lucy Applegate, Grace Lowe,Inez Whitcraft, Elizabeth Stanteford, Philo-mena Bogeman, Mae Groff, Olive James,Blanche Sleeth and Catherine Price, and theMessrs. Lauflin, Schoeppel, Schockel, Porter,Troth, Green, Milholland, Schopmeyer, Cohee,and Davis. The party was chaperoned byMiss Rose Cox.ATHLET A.The following girls were initiated at thehome of Miss Estella Doerschuk in South Sev-DELTA.On the evening of October 30 the MissesHeil, Crossgrave and Gregory gave a Hallow-eeiT—party to the girls of their Section. Aghost greeted the guests in the dimly lightedhall and motioned them to her abode. Heretwo creatures with glaring eyes revealed- curiously dressed individuals. The ghost broke thesilence by relating an incident of the power sheexerted over human beings. She then requestedher hearers to tell their experiences with theghost family. In various ways each ones future was foretold. Marshmallows, cider,doughnuts and apples caused them to return toearth again.
