Description: 116THE NORMAL ADVANCE.During the weeks vacation of the publicschools of the city, many of the city teachers visited our school. A few of them entered classesand took the regular work of the school for theweek.President Parsons recently gave a chapel talk inwhich he said that the Trustees, Faculty, andPresident of the Faculty, were strongly opposedto class riots, hazing, or any form of school disorder and that if these occurred here, the offenderswould be dealt with according to the gravity ofthe offence. It is their intention that the NormalSchool shall be a model school in its social life aswell as in its intellectual life. This is the properspirit and the attitude which has long been understood and approved by all the Normall students.Miss Caroline Calvin, a graduate of the IndianaState Normal in 90, and I. U. in 93, after threeyears of original research and post-graduate classwork in History at the University of Pennsylvania, received the degree of Ph. D., in 01.Her Thesis, The Invasion of Ireland by Edward Bruce, led her into a surprisingly fruitfulfield of research in History and inspired her withgreat zeal to study some of the modern Irishsocial problems in their original home.After spending the winter in assisting one of theprofessors of the University of Pennsylvania ingetting out a text in history, she sailed in March,1902, for Dublin. Until the following August shetraveled from province to province, living amongthe Irish and acquiring a first hand knowledge ofthe Irish character and customs.Last September Miss Calvin began her dutiesas a professor of European History in the OronoState University of Maine. The president, Dr.Fellows, recently of Chicago University, and whopreviously had charge of European History inIndiana University, is at the head of the department. He has, however, left Miss Calvin to selectthe work on history for the library and to arrangethe course of study for the department. Thisuniversity has a faculty of fifty and Miss Calvin isthe first and only woman who has been numberedwith its instructors.Society and Societies.YOUNG MENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.Much to the disappointment of many, Rev.Tippy was not permitted to fill his appointmentwith the Associations on March 7th. He will,however, deliver his lecture here at a later date:—perhaps next term.The officers for the new year, beginning withthe spring term, are being chosen by the nominating committee and will be reported in the nextissue together with a short report of the yearswork.WOMENS LEAGUE.On Saturday afternoon, February 28th, MissAnderson entertained the officers and section leaders of the League. A very pleasant afteriKion wasspent and considerable business was transacted.Many things of general interest to the Leaguewere discussed and plans were suggested tostrengthen the organization. Arrangements weremade to provide for a series of art talks to be givenduring the spring term. Dainty refreshmentswere served.Saturday evening, March 7th, the League gavea midwinter picnic in the Botanical laboratory.The affair was a thorough success in every respect. All the sections were present with almostthe entire membership. The laboratory tableswere placed together and an abundant lunch wasserved. It was an informal occasion, and thoroughly enjoyed.
