116THE NORMAL ADVANCEThe annual Bryan prize discussion was held inthe afternoon on the subject, Is IndianaReady for the Initiative and Referendum?Iowa boasts of a teacher who has taughtfifty-two consecutive winters. His name is E.W. Beard, and he resides at Indianola. It isnoteworthy, however, that Mr. Beard is aHoosier.According to traditions the schoolmaamswill have to stick to the profession for fouryears more, unless arrangements were madeotherwise, while 1908 gave them the initiative. The United States Government will issue100,000,000 new two-cent postage stamps on orbefore February 12. The series is to.commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of thebirth of Lincoln, and will bear a portrait of themartyred president.College Course NotesThe winter term shows an enrollment ofsixty-two persons in the College Course. Thisincludes five persons who entered the school forthe first time and several transfers from theNormal Course. Included in this number areseveral from other colleges and universities inthe State. At present the indications are that about tenpersons will graduate from the College Coursein June.Miss J. Rose Cunningham, teaching in theYorkville, 111., High School, expects to finishher work in the summer term.A large number of letters indicating an interest on the part of the writers to enter uponthe College Course in the spring term havebeen received at the office. The College Course students will meet inRoom 20, Thursday, January 28, to elect officers. All College students are requested to bepresent, as other urgent business will also bebrought up and settled.ATHLETICSOh, its great, isnt it, to be a member ofthe varsity team, to represent the institution,to triumph over opposing teams and bow tothe plaudits of fair rooters. Did you ever stopto think soberly of what lies hidden beneath allof this glorj?Few of us realize the struggles which athletic heroes face during the varsity season. Ourbasketball boys are now swinging into line ofbattle for a severe campaign. During thegreater part of the fall term they have beenhard at work. To be a candidate meant to be athand for practice two or three times weekly, not counting the inter-class games. Each regular practice meant an evening trip to the citygymnasium, an hour and a half of strenuousexercise, followed by a tired, sleepy struggle inpreparation for the school work of the nextday. Now that the varsity basketball season is onin dead earnest, there will be no let up on thepractice stunts, rather the demands of the coachwill become all the more insistent. And thenthere is the added responsibility of the biggames, wherein outside conceptions of the ability and moral attitude of our institution are forthe moment more or less molded by the individual players. An intercollegiate basketball contest is nojoke to the participant. It takes a cool headedyoung man indeed who can give his undividedattention to studies and banish all speculations |
