100THE NORMAL ADVANCEThe new members for the term are: Nona
Madden and Delia Sanders. Both girls are very
capable and will be an aid to the society.The work taken up for the term is: Current
events, study of present-day plays, study of best
actors, debating, and open discussions on the
books, Jane Eyre, Marble Faun, and Les
Miserables.Miss Hildegard Machling entertained the so¬
ciety and their friends at a watch party. Prof.
Schockel and Miss Bailey were the chaperones.
Those present were: Misses St. John, Johnson,
Mapes, Gustin, Price, Steepleton, Gray, Sanders,
Stork, Machling, Perkins and Bailey. Messrs.
S trickier, Stevenson, Stork, Kelso, Murphy, Koch,
Brown, Murphy, Ellis and Prof. Schockel. Music,
readings, contests and games made the evening
enjoyable to every one. Some interesting and
amusing New Year resolutions were written.Miss Minerva Peyton has returned to school,
and will be active in the society.FORUM.The first meeting of the winter term was held
Wednesday, December 31. All of the members
of last term are in school for the ensuing term.
The members are Messrs. Hoffman, Rightsell,
Mahan, Crim, Blackman, Johnston, Troutman,
Mercker, Raridon and Dalton. With this force
of old members the society anticipates an inter¬
esting terms work.Schockel and Wood, graduate members of the
society, took part in the Alumni basket ball team
against the Normal varsity on Saturday evening,
December 13. They revealed some of their for¬
mer athletic spirit. Wood starred in almost every
stage of the game. Mr. Wood coached the Win-
gate High School basketball team that won the
pennant in 1913.The graduate members gave their annual re¬
ception and dance to the active members of the
society in Assembly hall, Indianapolis, on Tues¬
day evening, December 23. The hosts were: J.

Carmack, of Vincennes Jasper Curry, of West- ville Homer Skeeters, of Rockville Delta Henry, of Windfall Thomas Johnston, Andrew Mercker and George Blackman, of Terre Haute Charles Fowler, of Bicknell Carl Scudder, of Windfall Lee Harshman, of Terre Haute, and Floyd Miner, of French Lick.The guests included Miss Doris Drlake and Miss Omah Brown, of Terre Haute Miss Gladys Fischer, of Waveland Miss Lillian Torpy, of Ambia Mrs. Clyde Hillis, of Southport Miss Ada Williams, of Salem Miss Marie Rucker, Miss Elizabeth Hadel, Miss Marie Gottwalles and Miss Lelin Townsend, of Terre Haute Miss Edna Wallace, of East Chicago Miss Grace Holmes, of Brookville Miss Ruth Henderson, of Indian¬ apolis Miss Leonre Burnham, of Edinburg Miss Rose Mitchell, of Salem, and Mrs. Carl Scudder, of Windfall. The hall was decorated in the society colors, old gold and black, with stream¬ ers, screens for the lights and masses of palms which concealed the musicians.PHILOMATHEAN.The Philomathean Society has had many inter¬ esting programs during the past term. One of these was the Van Dyke program, which was given at the last meeting before vacation. Quo¬ tations from Van Dyke were given in response to roll call. Then Esther Newton, in a very pleas¬ ing way, told the story of The Blue Flower. This was followed by The Unknown Quantity, given by Gladys Rippetoe. This, too, was inter¬ esting. The last number of the program was readings from Van Dykes poetry.The society, having drafted and adopted a new constitution, expects to make the meetings this term a real source of both information and in¬ spiration.The new officers for the term are: Vice-presi¬ dent, Nannie Dunn treasurer, Hazel Shaper par¬ liamentarian, Miss Asbury. The other officers were re-elected. |
