THE NORMAL ADVANCE99UtterarpALETHENAI.The winter term promises to be a busy but very
valuable one for all Alethenai. All members of
last term have returned still more enthusiastic
and prepared to make the work of the society
even better than before. The program for the entire term has been care¬
fully planned, part of which includes a thorough
study of the important works of Browning, Keats,
Shelley and Burns. Special attention will also
be given to the most important social and com¬
mercial problems of the day.Officers for the term have been elected as fol¬
lows : Zelpha Burkett, president Edith Provines, vice-president Reba Arbogast, secretary Edna Elston, treasurer Louise McDonald, artist, and Bernice Bodenhofer, literary editor.CICERONIANS.The Ciceronian Debating Society has spent an¬ other month in hard work upon the question for the interstate debate, which will first be threshed over by the Ciceronians and Daedalians in their annual frolic on the last Saturday evening in January. While the study has not been slack, it has not resulted in an absolutely satisfactory knowledge of the subject, and the boys on the Ciceronian team are earnestly looking forward to the day when they can confer with the boys on the Daedalian team for the honor and glory of old I. S. N. Both teams cannot expect to win the inter-society debate, but both societies, we are sure, are going to contribute their share toward winning both interstate debates.DAEDALIANS.During the brief and precious Christmas vaca¬ tion the Daedalians made the most of their op¬ portunities. On Tuesday evening, December thetwenty-third, a large number of the Alumni and undergraduate members of the society held their annual banquet at Indianapolis. After the ban¬ quet a number of toasts were responded to. In the business meeting which followed officers for the ensuing year were elected. There were twen¬ ty-five members present. With the opening of the winter term the Daeda¬ lians are still working vigorously on the question for the coming debate. In the preliminary debate with the Ciceronians, the society will be represent¬ ed by Messrs. Wright, Stork and Hemmer. Re¬ gardless of what the outcome may be, we feel as¬ sured that these men will put forth their best efforts to uphold the honor of the society. The society regrets very much the loss of Mr. A. E. Logan for the remainder of this year. .Mr. Logan has taken up the principalship of the Riley schools. Our loss is his gain and our best wishes go with him.ECLECTIC.The program for the Eclectic Literary Society on Wednesday, December 17, was a debate on the subject, Resolved, that equal suffrage will benefit the American home. Miss St. John was the leader for the negative, and Miss Elliot for the affirma¬ tive. Both arguments showed careful prepara¬ tion. The decision was in favor of the negative.Miss Gertrude Elliot entertained the society on Saturday afternoon, December 20, with an infor¬ mal sewing party. The officers elected for the winter term are as follows: President, Ruby St. John vice-president, Lelia Johnson secretary, Gertrude Elliot treas¬ urer, Mary Stork artist, Miss Tajdor parlia¬ mentarian, Luella Mapes sergeant-at-arms, Myrta Gustin editor, Ruth Perkins. |
