44THE NORMAL ADVANCETHLBisTICSSINCE the last issue of the Advance much
has been done in promoting athletics at the
State Normal. The usual mass meeting was
called by Prof. Gillum in chapel hall. The
purpose of the Athletic Association was made
known to the new students in short talks by
Prof. Gillum, Coach Westphal, and Students
Right sell, Hyndman and Wright. The nom¬
inating committee for selecting the candidates
for the various offices of the Athletic Associa¬
tion was now selected, and at the election held
on October 25 the following officers were se¬
lected: Raymond M. Rightsell, president J. W. Fitzgerald, vice-president Thomas R. Johnston, treasurer Miss Nell Glover, secre¬ tary Andrew Merker, custodian. The first meeting of the board of control was held the following week and arrangements were made for starting the work of the Athletic Associa¬ tion and promoting athletics here.Attention was now turned to the Boosters Marathon and to the preparation of Normal men for the event. Track Manager Hyndman has been working faithfully during the last few weeks, and believes he has a winning bunch. Some of the new men have been show¬ ing up well, and though they will be handi¬ capped by a lack of lengthy training they should make a very creditable showing.Preparations for the Annual Cider Meet have been held back very much owing to the inclem¬ ent weather. At this time no definite date for holding it has been selected. The Junior&offclass seems to lack organization, and at this writing has not been very well represented in practice. This class last year made a remark¬ able showing with only two men entered. The contest seems to be going to follow last years form and settle into a fight between the Col¬ lege Course and the Seniors.Manager Wright has been busy making out the basketball schedule, and at this time has the signed contracts for seven games. The sea¬ son opens December 5, when Merom will play here. The candidates have been working out three times a week and are rounding into splen¬ did form. Swanagen, Curtis, Schafer and Royse have been attracting considerable atten¬ tion because of their consistent work since the opening of the training season. Last years varsity men need no mention as to the quality of their work. They are playing better than last year, and last year was nearly the best in the history of the school.Again it is urged upon every student in the school to do something for Normal in athletics. If you have any ability in athletics try out for some of the school teams, for despised is the man who possesses the ability and through some petty reason will not use his ability for his school. If you do not have the ability to play use your influence to get others to play, or to bring good athletes to this school. It rests with you, the student body, as to the rec¬ ord that Normal will make this year in athletics. |
